Wearing seatbelts

This post was transferred on January 3, 2010. It was originally posted on May 26, 2009.

Two teens were injured in a one-vehicle rollover yesterday on U.S. Highway 20 between Fort Dodge and Webster City. They were not wearing seatbelts and the driver was ejected from the vehicle while it was rolling. (Names have been released on the Iowa State Patrol crash report site.)

I know one of the passengers who was in the accident on November 15, 2008, when Jessica Nickless died. Of the four people in the truck, three were not wearing seatbelts. Of those three, one died and the other two had severe injuries. The one wearing the seatbelt had minor injuries.

It's not hard to make a connection here. The authorities want people to wear seatbelts. Why? It's not because the government just wants to control everything about our lives, honest. It's because seatbelts save lives. Truly. It just makes sense. And even if you don't believe it, do it to save the $83 fine you pay if you get caught. But mostly, do it for your family, so they don't have to plan your funeral because you just didn't feel like wearing your seatbelt that day.
