It’s Halloween Giveaway Event


Growing up, my sister and I didn't get to go trick or treating much. I only remember once that I was allowed to go. We lived in the country from the time I was about 3 until I was 14. Dad felt that it was "begging" like actual begging on the street, so that was pretty much not allowed.

I took my kids trick or treating, though. Amanda's first trick or treat night was when she was nearly 2 1/2, and we lived in Chicago. We went around a long block in our neighborhood. I was pregnant with Cayla and it was chilly and dark. On the way back home, we stopped at a house that had a porch light on (which was the sign where we lived in Iowa when I was younger that you welcomed trick or treaters). We knocked, a man came to the door. He looked surprised, but went away and came back with a tray of things like refrigerator magnets. There was a distinct smell of marijuana.

So, here's my tips for Halloween:
  • Don't smoke pot if you expect people to come to your door. Police officers take their kids trick or treating, too, and you certainly don't want to make them have to interrupt their kids' fun to arrest you. 
  • If you welcome trick or treaters, have a porch or outside light on. If you don't want them, make sure that light is not on. 
  • Be prepared for a variety of ages. 
  • Offer different things - make sure there is something that doesn't have peanuts in case there's a kid who is allergic. You can give out fun stuff like spider rings, plastic fangs, glow sticks or stickers.
  • Wear a costume if possible - it makes the experience better for the trick or treaters and for you. 
  • Have fun!

Aunt Nancy's Green Cake

  My family calls this Aunt Nancy's Green Cake (it came from my Aunt Nancy, but I don't know where she got it). 1 yellow or white cake mix (for 13-by-9-inch pan) five eggs 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup oil 1/2 cup water 1 box instant pistachio pudding I mix the wet ingredients first, then add the cake mix and pudding mix. You'll need to use a mixer because the pudding makes it harder to stir. We use a bundt pan (well greased) and bake slightly longer than the instructions on the box. (I just checked the cake mix in my pantry - it says 33-36 minutes at 350F for bundt pan, so I would go 40 minutes and test for doneness.) We don't usually frost it. Maybe sprinkle powdered sugar over it. But do what makes you happy. The cake is very moist (five eggs!).

My Memories May blog train

So, it's been awhile

Wow. My last post was in November 2017. I'm not even going to try to recap the past 14 months in this post. A quick update, though. I won a free pass to Rootstech Feb. 27-March2 in Salt Lake City. I have family in the area who offered to let me stay with them, and a very kind person has offered to pay for my plane tickets. My next dilemma - and it's a big one - is which sessions to attend. I'm getting overwhelmed with choices. There are more than 300 sessions from Wednesday through Saturday, and I can't decide. So I'm going to throw this out there (if anybody's reading this) and say I will attend two sessions picked by someone else. The schedule is posted here . The two sessions must be on Thursday, Feb. 28. One morning session and one afternoon session. If there are multiple submissions, I will go with the most popular. If there's only one, I'll go to that one. Each person who comments can pick one morning session and one afternoon session.
