I can only imagine

I ache all over. A large part of it comes from not enough sleep. I've been getting up at 4:30 a.m. all this week to get Cayla to the pickup point for detasseling. (I got up yesterday, but she didn't go.) Part of it also comes from participating (in a small way) in the cleanup of the garage that Tonya has initiated. I spent 3-4 hours each day on Tuesday and Wednesday in the garage with her - not doing much, but helping and being a facilitator - if she needed garbage bags or paper towels, I got them. Last night I left work at 11:45 p.m., got home around midnight. I was in bed around 12:30 a.m. but didn't get to sleep for about half an hour. Up at 4:30 a.m. again. Cayla was still up when I got home last night. Partly because Amanda didn't let her on the computer until after 10 p.m. (even after I told her that Cayla has to get up early and she should let her on right away). So, as much pain as I feel, I can only imagine how Cayla feels right now. And I should get read

Surviving

Well, Cayla - and I - survived her first day of detasseling. I hadn't heard from her while I was at work, so I called Kent a couple of times to see if she had called him for a ride yet. By 5 p.m. she had not, so I took my supper break at 5:15 and went to the drop off point to wait. Another woman drove up and asked if I had heard when they were coming. I said I was just waiting in case they showed up. She parked and came over, and her phone rang. Her daughter said they were on the way back. I asked if I could use her phone, and before the phone number disappeared from her screen, I caught a glimpse of it - it looked like my number. Cayla had my phone, so it seemed likely that she had allowed the woman's daughter to call her mom. I called Kent to let him know I would take Cayla home. He said she had asked permission to go to Donna's to hang out with Jessica. I waited 'til Cayla arrived and took her over there. I got my phone back and called Jessica to hash out details

Milestones

So I woke up about 4 o'clock this morning. My alarm was set for 4:30, to get up and get Cayla up - she starts detassling today. My little girl has her first paying job (besides one babysitting gig a few months back). But this one is an official job - she had to fill out a W-2 and everything. I made a checklist: she had to pack her lunch, take her lunch, water jug, bug spray, sunscreen, poncho, etc. I planned to drive through McDonald's for breakfast (as it turns out, the McD closest to our route isn't open at 5:30 a.m.). I got her to the drop-off point on time and waited until the buses showed up, then left. She's got my cell phone to call her dad to pick her up when she is done for the day. I'll probably at work. And this is only for one week because she's got camp next week.

Much not have made much of an impression ...

So, Tuesday night our bishop called me on my cell phone while I was at work. He started out by saying, "Carol, you and Cayla haven't spoken in sacrament meeting this year ... " and I started laughing. I said, "two weeks ago. I had to ask you how much time I had for my talk - you were on the stand!" I was the first speaker and Dan Jensen was the second speaker. Now, I know he just got back from vacation, so it probably slipped his mind. But it's a little disconcerting to learn that my talk - or even the fact that I gave a talk - was so forgettable. But that's water under the bridge now, and Cayla gets to speak this Sunday. I'm not sure what steps he can take after that to make sure we get to church on time ... there are only so many people in my household. ;-)
